About the Artwork

Mahmoud Darwish (1941–2008) was a Palestinian poet and author widely regarded as Palestine’s national poet. Over his lifetime, he published 30 volumes of poetry and eight books of prose.

I created this portrait as part of a series honoring writers whose work has been important to my own development. Darwish’s poetry has been an important touchstone for me, with a lasting influence on my work as a writer.
